Course Title: Intelligent and Autonomous Robotics Systems
Duration: 4 Hours
Course Modalities:
- In-Classroom (166 West Main Street, Suite 204B, Mesa, AZ 85201)
This course focuses on how artificial intelligence transforms robotic systems from rule-based machines into systems capable of interpreting complex environments, making decisions under uncertainty, and operating with reduced human intervention. Participants will explore how AI integrates with perception and behavior to enable real-world autonomy.
This half-day course focuses on how AI enhances robotic systems to enable intelligent perception and autonomous behavior. Participants will explore how learning-based approaches differ from rule-based systems, how AI improves perception capabilities, and how robots make decisions in uncertain and dynamic environments.
The course emphasizes system-level understanding of autonomy, enabling learners to see how perception, behavior, and AI integrate into a complete autonomous system. Topics include learning-based perception, adaptive decision-making, autonomy levels, safety constraints, and deployment considerations.
Watch a humanoid robot make its own decisions. In this course, you will see the ASIMOV V1 operate under AI-powered perception, confidence-gated decision-making, and autonomous control. You will witness what happens when the AI is confident and correct, when it is confident and wrong, and what safety boundaries look like on a real autonomous system. During the demonstration, you will interact with the robot's autonomous mode, test its decision boundaries, and observe how safety overrides activate when confidence drops below threshold.
By the end of the course, learners will understand how robotic systems transition from controlled operation to autonomous behavior, and what is required to design, evaluate, and deploy intelligent robotic systems in real-world environments.
Students will be able to:
- Explain the difference between rule-based and learning-based robotic systems
- Describe how AI enhances perception beyond traditional sensor processing
- Differentiate between detection, recognition, and semantic understanding
- Explain how robots make decisions under uncertainty
- Describe different levels of autonomy in robotic systems
- Analyze how safety and control boundaries are defined in autonomous systems
- Evaluate the challenges of deploying autonomous robotic systems in real environments
Modules:
- AI in Robotics: From Rules to Learning
- AI-Enhanced Perception: From Signals to Meaning
- Confidence, Reliability, and Trusting AI Perception
- Autonomous Decision-Making Under Uncertainty
- Autonomous System Design: Safety, Control, and Deployment
- Final Exam
