Course Title: Sensor Systems and Robot Perception
Duration: 4 Hours
Course Modalities:
- In-Classroom (166 West Main Street, Suite 204B, Mesa, AZ 85201)
Understanding how robots operate and how to control them is only part of working with robotic systems. Real-world performance depends on how well a robot can sense and interpret its environment. This course builds on foundational and operational knowledge by focusing on how robots perceive the world through sensor systems and how that perception influences behavior.
Participants will learn how sensor data is generated, how it is processed into usable information, why perception systems fail in real environments, and how robots construct a usable internal view of the world. The course emphasizes practical understanding of perception as a system-level capability rather than an abstract concept or AI-specific topic.
This half-day course focuses on how robotic systems collect, process, and interpret environmental data through sensor systems. Participants will explore the different types of data robots work with, how raw signals are transformed into usable information, and how perception systems are affected by noise, environmental conditions, and system limitations.
The course emphasizes system-level understanding of perception, enabling learners to interpret sensor data, recognize when perception is unreliable, and understand how perception impacts overall system behavior. Topics include sensor data types, signal processing fundamentals, perception limitations, and environmental modeling at a conceptual level.
Watch a real robot misperceive the world. In this course, you will observe live sensor feeds from the ASIMOV V1's camera and IMU, see how noise corrupts real data, watch perception degrade under changing conditions, and diagnose exactly why the robot's view of the world does not match yours. During interactive demonstrations, you will change environmental conditions and observe in real time how the robot's sensor readings shift, degrade, and sometimes lie.
By the end of the course, learners will understand how robots sense the world, why perception systems fail in real environments, and how robots construct a functional understanding of their surroundings, forming the foundation for behavior design and intelligent systems in later courses.
Students will be able to:
- Describe the different types of sensor data used in robotic systems and what that data represents
- Explain how raw sensor signals are processed into usable information through filtering and interpretation
- Identify common sources of noise and distortion in sensor data and how they affect perception
- Analyze why robotic perception systems fail in real-world environments
- Explain how environmental factors impact sensor reliability and data quality
- Describe how robots combine multiple data sources to form a usable understanding of their surroundings
- Interpret perception-related issues and relate them to overall system behavior
Modules:
- Sensor Systems & Data Sources
- Signal Processing Foundations
- Processing Trade-offs & Real-World Diagnosis
- Perception Limits & Failure Modes
- Environmental Modeling & Spatial Awareness
- Final Exam
